Mennonite Sex

The second in Rhubarb’s 2013 Taboo series tackles Mennonite Sex reverently, irreverently, clearly and darkly in our biggest issue to date featuring a unique double cover. Rhubarb 32 was launched to an appreciative audience at the Prairie Ink Restaurant in Winnipeg’s McNally Robinson bookstore on March 27th, hosted by Di Brandt, the poetry editor for the issue.

The readers were new talents Kathleen Vermette whose first book was published in spring and Audrey Thiessen reading her stunningly beautiful Golden Horses, her first publication. Established writers like Patrick Friesen and Julia Spicher Kasdorf are also included as poets swarm the theme, with strong support from story tellers in fiction and in non-fiction including Jan Guenther Braun’s “Queer Sex in Bible College” featured website content from this issue. Gender is the focus of three artists working in related conceptual and sculptural art practises, in an expanded 8 page colour insert. Grace Nickel is the featured artist in our gallery in our site launch. Gathie Falk’s work has been featured in Rhubarb before and an image of hers is used for one of the covers, while Clint Neufeld re-imagines heavy machinery in porcelain.

Our Table of Contents lets you know what else is in this issue, available for purchase as a single issue or as part of an annual three issue subscription.
